Full post here We have reached the final checkpoint for the Summer 2011 Wakefield 2.1 pilot project. I, and the entire Wakefield 2.1 committee, would like to thank you for cooperating. We hope that you enjoyed the book, and we hope that you learned something, or at the very list, these questions made you think about your life in a digital age. I have to get through the 400+ (likely to be 700+) blog posts, but you can be assured that each and every one will be read. For those that allowed posting, your posts will be posted before the end of September. Those posts that prove to be thought provoking or those that challenge ideas will be shared with the faculty and, hopefully, the community at large. As a whole, the project proved to be successful in some areas and disappointing in others. Two hundred sixty-five people officially registered. The bulk of that group was students (nearly 10% of the school's population). While this may not seem high, it was double the participation that we expected, and it's likely that more participated than registered. On the other end of the spectrum, we were severely disappointed in the participation of parents. Perhaps we were optimistic, but we expected more participation from parents than students. While doubling the student population overestimates the number of parents, it gives us a rough idea. If that number is roughly 5000, the percentage of parents who registered was roughly 1/4 of 1 percent. I hope that this project will continue and that the participation grows. EVENTS. Due to the lack of participation from parents, the events scheduled for the summer have been delayed. I hope to have these events coincide with workdays, parent nights, half days, or other events that might allow for community attendance. Please listen for announcements. CHECKPOINT 3 QUESTION Wave 1 and 2, please post answers by August 28. Wave 3, please post answers by September 30. **Remember that if you have a current AP class requiring this assignment, you should answer questions ASAP regardless of wave. Only 1 this time: Perhaps the main purpose of this project was for students, parents and staff to think about the role of technology in education. My fear is that, in this 21st century digital age, we are all doing it wrong. However, this is still an age where testing drives the machine. Surely there is a balance between knowing the date of the end of the Civil War and an understanding of the significance of the event. In general, teachers and students are evaluated on the students' knowledge of the fact. Please read the articles and blog posts linked below and address the following question. How should education balance the role of technology and traditional learning to prepare students for the challenges of a career and their future lives? Wakefield fighting back found the turning point in the game in the top of the 3rd inning when Sanderson had the bases loaded with only one out. Rookie pitcher Evan Brabrand took the mound in relief and struck out the next two Spartans to squelch the Sanderson scoring threat. The Wolverines tied the score in the bottom of the 3rd and didn’t look back from there. Three more Wolverine runs in 4th inning and 2 more in the 6th secured the win for Brabrand, his first of the season. On the evening Brabrand gave up only 1 earned run, 3 hits and walked only 2 while striking out 4. The heart of the Wolverine order drove the offense collecting 7 of the 8 team hits. Will Butler went 3 for 3, driving in 1 run and scoring 3. Vance Vizcaino went 2 for 3 driving in 2 runs. Frankie LaGuardia made it a sweet trifecta going 2 for 4 and driving in 4 runs. In the way of odd stats, Courtney “The Magnet” Crews was “hit by a pitch” for the 5th time this season. The win moved the Wolverines to 7 and 1 in conference play and 10 and 2 over all on the season. Wakefield is on the road Tuesday night (April 12th) when they travel to Millbrook to avenge an early season defeat to the Wildcats. Game time is 7:00PM. 2011-04-12Wakefield Baseball Alumni News NEWS More Tim Aldeman ’06 picked up his first win for the Del Marva Shorebirds (Baltimore – Single A). 2010-11-01Winter Sport Tryout Date NEWS More Winter Sport Try-Out Date -- November 1, 2010 2010-10-26Congratulations to the Band NEWS More This past weekend the ensemble traveled to Towson, Maryland where they performed at the Bands of America Regional Championship at Towson University. This event included some of the top ensembles from 9 different states being evaluated by some of the best trained and most experienced adjudicators in North America. Our students had two very strong performances. They finished 5th overall in prelims, 2nd in their class and earned outstanding visual honors. This performance earned them an opportunity to perform again in finals, where they had another very good performance and retained their 5th overall standing. They were topped by Westminster HS (MD), Hickory HS (VA), Ooltewah HS (TN) and Bridgewater-Raritan HS (NJ). We were the highest placing group from NC. Cape Fear HS finished 7th and Cary HS finished 9th. There were three other NC groups that performed but did not earn a finalist position. We try not to put emphasis on any one performance or event; however, the positive national exposure that is generated by our performance at events like this one is important to note and recognize. Furthermore, it is important to note that our students have earned a coveted finalist position at these events each of the last three years and four of the last five years. Only two other NC ensembles can boast of such accomplishments for their students. 2010-10-25Absentees for Fall Portraits NEWS More Absentees for Fall Portraits
