WAKEFIELD WOMEN’S CHORALE Fall Semester – Period 1
Vocal Music II, III, III & IV
This ensemble is comprised of women returning to the WHS choral program who are interested in working in advanced ensemble environment and developing strong performance skills. This ensemble will perform in all major concerts, contests, and appearances as requested by the school and community. Many appearances will include literature in a variety of styles and genres. Some extra rehearsals are expected after school as well as all performances.
MENS’ ENSEMBLE Fall Semester – Period 2.VOVO
Vocal Music I, II, III, III & IV
This ensemble is open to all WHS men regardless of age or level of vocal development. This ensemble will perform 2 concerts in the fall semester. This ensemble is the only WHS ensemble that is not auditioned and is the only chorus available to men who wish to study only one semester. Some extra rehearsal are expected after school at times, however, is not on-going or on a regular basis. You will be notified in plenty of time before a mandatory after school rehearsal is scheduled to that you may make plans for alternative transportation.
WOMENS CHORUS Spring Semester – Period 1
Vocal Music I, II, III, IV This ensemble is designed specifically to assist the more inexperienced female singer make the transition to the high school choral environment The female voice matures at an incredibly fast pace between ages 14 and 18. Singers are required to participate in all concert performances and for some mandatory after-school rehearsals. Other performance opportunities provided and are optional. Women enrolled in this class are “travel eligible” however, space is limited, and therefore, priority is given to upper classmen.
WOLVERINE CONCERT CHOIR Spring Semester – Period 2
Vocal Music I, II, III, III Honors, IV, and IV Honors
This mixed ensemble is designed to meet the needs for the more advanced singer. Students enrolled in Concert Choir MUST have been enrolled in a vocal ensemble during the preceding fall. This ensemble regularly participates in outside performance obligations including Senior night, Awards Day and Graduation. This ensemble is scheduled to travel out of state this year and will require a considerable financial commitment for registration and travel.
Music Theory / AP Music Theory Fall Semester - Period 4
Course Overview
The music theory course involves the study of notation, musical form and analysis, sight-reading, development of listening skills, melodic and harmonic dictation, and some form of composition and arranging. This course will be offered in the fall semester beginning August 26, 2010. This is an 18 week long course.
Music Appreciation Spring Semester - Period 4
Course Overview
In addition to comprehensive discussion of the musical style and sociological aspects of each historical period, the lives, individual styles, and representative works of many composers are examined in detail. Through repeated exposure to a variety of musical compositions, students are encouraged to listen for basic forms as well as for elements of music such as dynamics, tone color, rhythm and texture.

Wolverine Concert Choir - Wakefield High School
The Wolverine Concert Choir has been an ensemble that has evolved and grown both in numbers and as musicians over the past seven years under the direction of Mr. John-Philip Mullinax. The Concert Choir is a combination of two classes during the fall semester of study, Men’s Ensemble and Women’s Chorale, is comprised primarily of students returning to the choral program. During spring semester of study, the Concert Choir retains students from those ensembles enrolled for two consecutive semesters of study during that academic year.
With the philosophy that “Smart Singers make Great Music”, the Wakefield High School choral program is comprehensive in its approach. Students learn a varied approach to rehearsal techniques, practice sight singing daily, study fundamentals of vocal pedagogy, music theory, music history, IPA, use of technical language, ear training, and listening assessments. Students must also present a voice jury each semester. The Wakefield Choral Department will perform two major concerts this year. Students will also present Holiday Cabaret, Spring Soiree, a Valentine’s Day Madrigal Dinner, an Honor’s Voice Recital. In February 2011, the Wolverine Concert Choir participated in the UNC-Charlotte Choral Invitational with guest clinician, Dr. Rodney Eichenberger. Wakefield Choral program consistently receives outstanding ratings at NCMEA Music Adjudications. During the 2010-2011 year, the Wolverine Concert Choir, received a Superior rating in Grade VI literature and a perfect 100% on Sight Singing. Members of the Concert Choir also participate in Solo and Small Ensemble, Wake All-County Chorus, NC All State Choruses and NC Honors Chorus.
Director BIO
John-Philip Mullinax - Director
John-Philip Mullinax received his formal training in North Carolina at Mars Hill College (B.M), studying voice with Dr. William Thomas and Dr. Susan Hensley. He earned his Master of Music in Conducting Performance from the University of North Texas, in Denton, TX, studying with Dr. Hal Gibbons and Dr. Mel Ivy. He also studied Vocal Performance at Converse College with Ms. Jane Rolandi, and Conducting Performance at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX, with Dr. Robert Burton and Dr. David Keith.
He has held teaching positions at the Performing Arts High School in Fort Worth, Texas; Pinellas County Center for the Performing Arts at Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg, Florida; and the Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts at Einstein High School, in Kensington, Maryland. He is currently Department Chair and Director of Choral Activities at Wakefield High School in Raleigh NC, and is also the Co-Staff Development Coordinator for the High School Choral Staff in Wake County.
Mr. Mullinax is an active professional conductor and church musician. He has conducted professionally and held numerous church music positions in Texas, Florida and the Carolinas. His choruses have performed in major concert halls in Raleigh, Fort Worth, Dallas, San Jose, Miami, Tampa, Saint Petersburg, New York and Montreal. His professional appearances have consistently received positive reviews and his conducting has been described as “gifted artistry” by the press.
